Scansion Activity

For anyone who’s interested, here’s a scansion lesson that I put together a while back, inspired by a lesson by poet Judy Jordan. Basically, this shows how to count stressed versus unstressed syllables, which is a great way to diagnose problems with or patterns in any piece of writing. In other words, this is an EKG to determine the pulse rate of a given line, whether it’s poetry or prose, and then respond/edit accordingly. I also talk a little bit about this in Brevity.
